Planning the Perfect Lake District Itinerary
If you are searching for things to do in the Lake District, the choice can sometimes seem overwhelming. Visitors come to the area for a day out or a short break, and are determined to fit in as many activities, sights and experiences as possible. At Ullswater 'Steamers', many people we speak to in our pier houses and on our boats are keen to ensure that they experience the best of the Lake District and Cumbria, and don't miss out on any 'must see' and 'must do' options. As a heritage tourist attraction operator, we have learned a thing or two about what to see and do in the Lake District. Read on for our top tips...
Boat trips in the Lake District
Taking a Lake District boat trip is our number one recommendation! There is nothing quite like hopping aboard a heritage vessel and viewing the stunning Lakeland scenery from a unique perspective. We'd love it if you put a trip with Ullswater 'Steamers' at the top of your list but there are also many other locations for memorable boat tours such as Derwentwater, Coniston and Windermere. Lake cruises are one of the most relaxing things to do in the Lake District and are very popular.
Ullswater ‘Steamers’ heritage fleet includes M.Y. Lady of the Lake which dates back to 1877 and is believed to be one of the oldest working passenger boats in the world. Our cruises offer spectacular views of Lakeland’s highest mountains and vary in length. Boats sail between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, stopping at Howtown. A shuttle also runs between Glenridding and National Trust Aira Force pier. There are onboard facilities including licensed bars, and pier houses provide light refreshments, gift shops, and free Wi-Fi.
Walking in the Lake District
When it comes to hiking and walking in the Lake District, our top tip is to take adventures at your own pace. Lake District walks come in many different lengths and levels of difficulty but, almost all provide breathtaking views. We recommend visiting the Adventure Smart Lake District Cumbria website and following its guidance, as well as checking the local weather forecast and ensuring that you have the right equipment for your walk.
There are many famous walking routes such as the Ullswater Way, a 20-mile circular route around the lake offering views of William Wordsworth's famous 'Daffodils' in the spring. And, if you don't wish to walk it all, you can complete sections aboard our heritage boats. You can also walk from the lake to Aira Force, one of the most famous waterfalls in the Lake District. The walk to the waterfall takes you through ancient woodland and offers stunning views. It’s a great place for a picnic and some nature photography.
Hiking Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England, is popular with adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. The hike to the summit is challenging but rewarding, offering panoramic views. Make sure to follow the guidance above before you set out.
If you are not sure where to start, the Lake District National Park offers a comprehensive programme of guided walks with different difficulty levels. This may be ideal for those who are not familiar with the fells. There are also a large number of 'Miles Without Stiles' routes, more accessible walking routes suitable for people with limited mobility.
Family-friendly activities in Cumbria
We are often asked where is best for kids in the Lake District. For a truly memorable day out, our advice is to look for an attraction or activity that will appeal to everyone in your group. Visit Lake District provides a very comprehensive list of attractions for all ages but our favourite (apart from trips aboard our heritage boats, of course) is our sister attraction, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.
This steam railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow-gauge railways in England, taking visitors on a scenic journey from the coastal village of Ravenglass to the foot of England’s highest mountains. It’s a fantastic day out, offering stunning views and a unique way to explore the Lake District, as well as a museum, play areas and cafés.
We haven't forgotten about four-legged family members either. There are so many dog-friendly things to do in the Lake District, so there is no need to leave anyone behind. Dogs are welcome aboard our boats and we have even introduced a 'Rover' season ticket for them.
Food and drink in the Lake District
Do you know what food the Lake District is famous for? Cumberland sausage, Kendal Mint Cake and Grasmere Gingerbread (pictured above) are all delicacies we recommend sampling! Cumbria's rich culinary history has created many exceptional food and drink experiences and activities for 'foodies'. Here are some of our favourites:
- Afternoon tea at the Inn on the Lake, Glenridding, or the Lakeside Hotel near Windermere
- Shed 1's Gin Distillery Tour & Tastings
- Lakes Distillery's Single Malt Whisky Experience
- Dalemain's Marmalade Festival
- The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway's 'Cream Tea on the Move' experience

Historical tours in the Lake District
If you love history, you'll discover many fascinating things to do in the Lake District, including visits to historic sites and museums. There are so many to explore but here are some of our hand-picked recommendations:
